A college prep program for students who want to be prepared for college and are determined to get there through hard work.

AVID Announcements
Write-Off Change of Date
Due to participation in a district committee, I've just been told I will be out of class on Wednesday, January 25th. Therefore, I have to move the Write-Off to the 24th. Hopefully, this will not cause any problems with students being gone.
3rd Quarter AVID
Our focus for 2nd semester is high school preparation, in addition to our constant focus on college prep. This quarter students will be participating in the AVID Write-Off, an yearly essay contest. This year will be a brand-new format for the essay, so students are learning that in addition to practicing basic writing skills. Please make sure your student is not absent on Tuesday, January 24th!

We will also be taking the Explore test this quarter, which helps students compare their skills to other 8th graders in the country, as well as gives advice on possible future careers and make suggestions on how to strengthen weaknesses. It's a very valuable test! We will be using the results as the basis of a college-to-career project, which will probably take place at the end of this or the beginning of next quarter.

Students must continue to be vigilant about their binders and notes to keep up grades for 3rd quarter!

Grading
Students will be graded on a 5 point scale:
5=A
4=B
3=C
2=D
1=F
0=missing

Some assignments, such as in-class notes or very small assignments, will be weighted as one assignment, while other assignments, such as large essays or projects, will be weighted as more than one assignment. This means that all assignments count, but missing a large essay or project will affect a student's grade more than missing a small assignment.

Make up work will lose some points for being late, but students can turn in any assignment up to a week before the end of the quarter. The best way to keep a grade high is to turn in every assignment on time. The best way to raise a grade is to turn in all missing assignments. This must be done before any extra credit will be considered.

Binders

AVID students are required to have and carry fully stocked binders every day. Binders must be 2" or larger, and have pens, pencils, erasers, highlighters, lined paper, section dividers, and a pouch for supplies. Students have to restock binders during the school year as their supplies run out.

Supplies are available on a limited basis through the AVID teachers.
